For 60 years, the pool at GCBC has been the setting for lifelong memories for thousands of campers. For some, they are memories of simple childhood fun in the pool on a hot Mississippi summer day, playing water polo, relaxing with friends, and learning a new trick on the diving board. For many, it’s where they made the most important decision of their lives – to be joined with Christ through baptism.

The pool has been the home of moments of pure childhood joy and it’s been the watery grave through which hundreds have given their lives to Christ. It has served many purposes for many people. That’s the beauty of the Camp pool. It’s a perfect illustration of why Camp is such an effective ministry. It joins lighthearted fun and the life changing impact of the gospel. Here, somehow, baptisms and bellyflops go hand in hand.

The reason is simple – it’s all coming from the same source. The same God who calls us to be buried with Him in baptism also designed us to see Him in the simple joys of childhood, like a dip in the pool on a summer day. We may not think of it often, but in truth, the powerful transformation of baptism and the hilarious fun of a belly flop both flow straight from the source – Jesus Christ. He designed us for both of these things: for a life lived in the Holy Spirit and for fullness in that life, including fun, joy, and laughter.
